Position Summary
Big Bend Community College invites applications for Outreach Mentors with the College's TRiO Upward Bound 2021 Summer Program. This position will meet daily with students through virtual means such as video conferencing, texting, calls, emails, etc. Also, will serve as a liaison between student, instructors, parents and program staff as well as other assigned duties.

TRiO Upward Bound is a federally funded grant program from the U.S. Department of Education. It receives $540,298 of yearly funding which covers 100% of program costs. This year-round program provides academic support, college preparation, career awareness, and other support services to eligible low-income and/or potential first-generation college students. Its goal is to help students become more successful in high school and prepare them to enter and complete a postsecondary education. The program works with the following (4) target high schools located in Central Washington: Moses Lake, Othello, Royal, and Warden High School.

Traditionally, TRiO Upward Bound operates an academic residential summer academy with 52 students living on the BBCC campus. However due to the pandemic, the academy will be operating virtually. Students will be taking either high school or college online courses to prepare for the upcoming academic year. This is not a credit retrieval-type program but one designed for motivated students who want to gain the skills necessary to succeed in college. Students will also participate in organized social, cultural, and recreational activities offered online to promote personal and social awareness and growth. *May be required to meet for in-person trainings, meetings, field trips and end of the summer award ceremony.

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is a comprehensive public community college serving a large, rural district in central Washington State. BBCC's main campus is located in the City of Moses Lake (pop. 24,009) in Grant County, situated on the former Larson Air Force Base. In addition to the central campus, BBCC has learning centers in seven outlying communities that provide adult basic education, high school completion, and English Language Learning programs as gateways to college. We are accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities and we serve approximately 4,000 students, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,000.

Salary for this position is $3,200.00 for 40 program days, June 24-August 14, 2021. Must be available for the entire term.

Essential Job Duties
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Meet daily with students through virtual means such as video conferencing, texting, calls, emails, etc.
  • Serve as a liaison between student, instructors, parents, and program staff.
  • Provide tutoring & advising to individual students and groups.
  • Support students in managing their online learning experience.
  • Create a learning & social environment that is welcoming, supportive, and flexible to meet student needs.
  • Share & teach strategies for academic success: test taking tips, time management, organization, etc.
  • Monitor and report students' academic progress & other related concerns.
  • Maintain student progress reports and other related documentation.
  • Supervise students during end of the year field trip and other activities if offered.
  • Plan & facilitate virtual educational, cultural, and recreational activities.
  • Exemplify & model positive college-going behaviors.
  • Build meaningful and trusting relationships through mentorship with students.
  • Participate in daily virtual team meetings and weekly meetings with instructors and program staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Work Monday-Friday (including a few weekends); daily work schedule will vary based on program needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:

  • Two years of college completed after high school graduation, even if you participated in Running Start.
  • Daily access to a computer with camera & strong Wi-Fi in a quiet environment.
  • Proficient with technology and strong ability to learn new tech skills.
  • Ability to work independently and asynchronously; prioritize tasks, mange time & complete projects in a fast paced and ever-changing environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience working with students from diverse academic, age, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Ability to pass a favorable background check through the Washington State Patrol.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with high school students and/or disadvantaged populations.
  • Tutoring and/or advising experience.
  • Experience with online learning, hybrid courses, and learning management systems (Canvas, Blackboard, Google classroom, etc.).
  • Experience working with TRIO programs and/or are a TRIO alumnus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.

Speak to your understanding of the challenges that these students face and discuss how your experiences in education could help them be successful in an online learning environment.
  • Please share creative technology ideas that could be implemented to improve student engagement, motivation, and learning.
