Job Description

Nevada State College (NSC) invites applications for the position of Career Mentor. We are interested in applicants who are motivated, able to learn new skills quickly, enjoy helping others, and are detail-oriented. Interested applicants should be comfortable with a high level of responsibility and in good academic standing. Professionalism and a willingness to help others is a must. Applicants should have some experience working one-on-one with peers and presenting in front of groups. Career Mentors must possess excellent communication (both written and verbal) skills as well as an ability to connect with diverse individuals.

Career Mentors will be an integral component in providing career development services to NSC students. Career Mentors will be required to go through ongoing paid training prior to the start of each semester, usually 5 full days. Career Mentors would welcome students to the Career Services Center and assist them with a range of activities, including resume and cover letter preparation, major/career exploration, job searches for on-campus employment and off-campus employment, interview preparation, and building student profiles and setting preferences in Handshake (NSC's career network for students). Career Mentors also would orient students to the Career Services Center's many resources and events. They would train students on how to use Handshake, LinkedIn, job search websites and career exploration tools. Career Mentors would also help communicate with employers and present in classrooms.

Career Mentors would also assist with office duties such as scheduling appointments, answering phone calls and emails, creating flyers and marketing material, managing the office's social media accounts, marketing career development events, planning and attending career events, and other duties as assigned.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Provide friendly and attentive customer service, greeting and assisting students with their career advising needs
  • Provide 1-on-1 and group advising on resume coaching and review of cover letters and job applications, as well as assistance with major/career exploration and interview preparation
  • Mentor students to improve their job search, professional communication, and interviewing skills
  • Advise students at every stage in their career exploration journey
  • Assist students in navigating online resources, including Handshake, Focus2, Big Interview and LinkedIn
  • Develop a working knowledge of career and graduate-school resources on campus, in the community, and online
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of various projects and initiatives, including large-scale events such as career fairs
  • Give presentations to classes on the center's resources and services
  • Participate in intensive initial and ongoing training to develop and learn new skills


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be in good academic standing with a 2.5 minimum GPA.
  • Must be an NSC degree-seeking student enrolled in at least 6 college level credits each semester employed
  • Must commit to working 15 - 19.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, primarily between the hours of 8am-5pm; must attend all required training sessions
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude and foster a welcoming rapport with students, faculty, staff and employers
  • Ability to mentor students with career planning and development
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills; excellent writing skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and public speaking skills
  • Exhibit leadership and initiative; be dependable, display self-discipline and professionalism
  • Must demonstrate ability to maintain FERPA standards and manage sensitive information
  • Be sensitive and responsive to diverse audiences
  • Ability to work independently and on a team
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs with proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to address student needs in a creative and innovative fashion
  • Graphic design and social media skills a plus
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation a plus
  • Prior experience tutoring or mentoring a plus
  • Knowledge of available student support services at NSC
  • Able to work flexible hours (some evenings/weekends)


Work Hours:

Student employees can work up to 19.5 hours per week.

Career Mentors will need to commit to working 15-19.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday, primarily between the hours of 8am-5pm. Occasionally, career mentors will be asked to work weekends to assist with career-related events. It is important that your schedule includes a substantial amount of open time between these hours. Career Mentors are required to attend 2 weeks of paid training prior to the beginning of fall semester, and 1 week of paid training prior to the beginning of spring semester.

Hourly Rate:

$12.00 per hour
