Job Description

Nevada State College (NSC) invites applications for the position of Sankofa Summer Bridge Community Mentor. Sankofa is the new Black student recruitment and retention program at NSC. The Sankofa Summer Bridge is a two-week academic enrichment program geared towards high school juniors, seniors and incoming NSC freshmen. The Sankofa Summer Bridge Community Mentors are dynamic leaders who are passionate about community advocacy, social justice and supporting their peers in achieving academic success in college. Sankofa Community Mentors will play a critical role in developing team-building activities for the Summer Bridge participants, providing workshops, supervising field trips, supporting in-class and online activities and creating a memorable experience for potential NSC students.

Core Responsibilities:

Advise students on college readiness such as: financial aid, study skills, research, writing and effective interpersonal communication
Mentor Sankofa students on leadership skills, socioemotional development and community engagement
Supervise students on field trips and other activities on and off campus
Work with faculty and staff to design and implement co-curricular activities
Generate periodic reports on Sankofa Summer Bridge students' success
Engage with community partners
Host online and in person workshops with Summer Bridge students
Provide career building guidance
Coordinate with the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office to support students in completing their Financial Aid packages
Collaborate with the Admissions and Recruitment Office to help students complete their NSC applications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Education or Related Field
A history of working with students of color.
Deep awareness of the Black community in Las Vegas.
Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas).
Previous mentorship experience.
Desire to uplift incoming students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to participate online and in-person for Sankofa events
Master's in Education or Related Field
Experience working with college students
Demonstrated record of leadership and academic excellence
Record of leadership and community advocacy

Work Hours:

Community employees will work a minimum of 20 hours for the 2-week program, with the option of additional hours as needed to ensure program success.

Hourly Rate:

$20.00 per hour, for 5 days for the 2-week period of the program.
