DESCRIPTION
Mendocino College is currently accepting applications to participate in our NEW Faculty Diversity Mentorship Program (FDMP). The FDMP is a year-long, paid by stipend, mentorship with currently employed Mendocino College faculty.
The program mission is to meet the needs of our diverse students by attracting, inspiring, and preparing individuals who share the college's commitment to inclusive, equitable learning as they prepare themselves for a career in community college teaching.
The Faculty Diversity Mentorship Program (FDMP) brings faculty mentees from diverse backgrounds into the Mendocino College community for training and hands-on experiences in our classes and programs. Mendocino College faculty mentees gain valuable professional development and career exploration opportunities while the students and institution benefit from increased diversity, expanded faculty hiring pools, and new perspectives.
Ultimately, by attracting, recruiting, and providing advanced training for talented new faculty with diverse backgrounds and ideas, we hope to better serve our students. Specifically, we aim to
- Promote equitable achievement for students of all gender identities, and cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and
- Ensure Mendocino College students from underrepresented groups have role models from their gender category, race, ethnic, or cultural background who they can identify with and recognize as examples of high achievement
The main campus is located in Ukiah, CA; with centers locations in Lakeport, CA; Willits, CA; Fort Bragg, CA; and online. We look forward to reviewing your application.
This mentorship will require in-person participation at one or more of our Mendocino College locations.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE

- Cover Letter including why you are interested in the Faculty Diversity Mentorship Program
- Photocopies of all transcripts; a foreign transcript evaluation must be attached if applicable. Official copies of transcripts are required upon employment
COMPENSATION
Faculty Mentees will be paid $1000 stipend at the end of the fall semester for completing their summer training and six fall workshops. They will be paid a $1,500 stipend at the end of the spring semester for competing their paired teaching experience and presenting their capstone project at the FDMP symposium.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Selected mentees will begin their training in summer 2024. Below is a brief description of the duties expected of the mentee.
Summer 2024
- Onboard with Human Resources
- 5 Hours of Mandated Trainings
Fall 2024
- Week 1: Community College System & Course Outline of Record to the Student-Centered Syllabus
- Week 2: Equity minded teaching and assessment practices & Building relationships with students
- Week 3: The First Week and Institutional Responsibilities
- Week 4: A Day in the Life Faculty Panel and Introduction to Student Services
- Week 5: Applying for PT/FT Faculty Positions & Workshop Syllabus and Teaching Philosophy
- Week 6: Mock Interview and Mentor Meeting
Spring 2025
- Faculty Mentee and Mentor Meet Bi-weekly
- Mentees work as an Embedded Tutor in their mentor's class or in a counseling, tutoring, or library role relevant to their learning objectives
- Mentees complete a capstone project and present it at the FDMP symposium
- Program and learning objectives are evaluated.
Interview Information for Selected Candidates
- Interviews will take place via Zoom
- Interviews will last 10-15 minutes
- Interview will include a 5 minute teaching demonstration in the candidate's teachable subject on a topic of the candidate's choosing
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including a Live Scan background check.
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, and faculty.
ELIGIBILTY CRITERIA:
- Master's or PhD in any discipline
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years of fulltime occupational experience in a vocational/technical area
- Associate's degree with a minimum of six years of fulltime occupational experience in a vocational/technical area
- Or completion of any of the above stated degrees/experience within the 2024-2025 academic year
