Position Summary:
MSU Denver's TRIO Upward Bound Program (TRIO) is currently seeking mentor and instructional assistants for our 6-week summer hybrid program. This position will support students that attend six Denver Public Schools: Abraham Lincoln High School, East High School, Manual High School, North High School, West Early College, and West Leadership Academy who are first generation high school students (first in their family to attend college), with a desire to attend college.

This position will focus on providing virtual instructional assistance to instructors and mentoring that supports the active engagement of students in classes focused on Math, Literature, Lab Science, Foreign Language, Robotics/Engineering, Civics/Social Responsibility, Financial Literacy and Art. Additionally, you will assist with the planning and facilitation of program activities and provide general data entry support.
The TRiO program is aimed at strengthening student educational interest, motivation and achievement that leads to the development of a successful vision and plan for high school success, attending and completing college. #LI-DNI


Duties/Responsibilities:
Maintain an environment conducive to learning, including keeping computer screen on during programming, minimizing background noise and ensuring professional and appropriate mentor/participant interactions
Assist with classroom management and collaborate with college professors to support instruction during classes.
Chaperone Friday in person fieldtrips and be able to attend 3-day retreat at YMCA of the Rockies at Snow Mountain Ranch June 21 July 30.
Complete administrative tasks Track attendance, input data into student database
Attend staff meetings and trainings
Serve as a role model for participants, demonstrating integrity and accountability
Actively listen, provide information, encouragement, and guidance to students
Communicate regularly with students during class time, keeping them on-task
Report regularly to specified admin staff regarding students progress and needs

Mentor students serve as primary advisor, counselor and cheerleader to students including:
- Build and maintain a rapport with students
- Help students build a vision for high school success and future college participation
- Pass on knowledge, insights and expertise about college preparation
- Offer guidance and support their understanding of knowledge and skills introduced during classes
- Assist in setting goals
- Be an active listener
- Encourage students to aspire to excellence


Required Qualifications:
MUST BE A STUDENT ENROLLED AT AN APPROVED COLORADO HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION

Demonstrate commitment to serving high-need urban youth and families
Ability to work with diverse populations, including being sensitive to the diverse needs, learning styles, and abilities of Upward Bound students
Commitment to participate for the full 6 weeks of the summer program
Ability to work 5 days a week from 9am 2pm, Monday through Thursday and 2-4 hours on Fridays for in person field trips and student engagement
Current student enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credit hours
College sophomore, junior, or senior standing is preferred, although qualified freshman applicants will be considered.
Remain in good academic and judicial standing at higher institution
Initiative, punctuality, dependability, discipline, and self-confidence
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to motivate and encourage youth
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Have working computer, internet access with video conferencing capability
Must be comfortable and able to communicate via video conferencing during programming


Preferred Qualifications:
Tutoring/mentoring or teaching experience
Previous training or work experience with youth, particularly high school youth from diverse backgrounds
Bilingual in English and Spanish
CPR and First Aid Certified (preferred, but will provide training)
