Position Summary:
The Center for Urban Education at Metropolitan State University of Denver is currently recruiting mentors for two summer camps: a virtual 2-week College and Career Readiness Camp for high school students and a Middle School Summer Science Camp which will be virtual with 2 in-person field trips.

College and Career Readiness Summer Camp is aimed at strengthening student educational interest, motivation and achievement that will lead to the development of a successful vision and plan for high school success, attending college and completing a college degree. DPS students will begin their experience career explorations and make an educational plan and then they will learn skills relating to resume writing and completing a job or scholarship interview. When they complete the program they will present reflections on what they learned. College Mentors will support them in their explorations, help them edit their resumes and personal statements and coach them through the interview process.

Middle School Summer Science Camp is aimed at encouraging youth to deepen their interest and academic achievement in the sciences while providing engaging experiments and activities to stimulate their learning and develop their sense of curiosity while strengthening their ability to problem solve and think critically. All classes are designed to connect directly to the Colorado State Science Competencies for middle school students. There will be two field trips to chaperone following COVID -19 safety procedures so students can interact and learn in a hands on interactive way. Bus Transportation from the schools and Lunch will be provided during the field trips for students and staff. #LI-DNI


Duties/Responsibilities:
Primary Roles and Responsibilities

The overarching goals for theses camps are to motivate participating students to care about their learning by building their aspirations for college and career attainment or widening their understanding of and love for Science.

1.Mentors will collaborate to support instruction during classes and facilitate work sessions

2.Mentors will record attendance and track student progress using provided data tracker to make sure they are successful in camp

3.Mentors will serve as the primary advisor, counselor and cheerleader to students, including:

Help youth build a vision for high school success and future college participation

Pass on knowledge, insights and personal expertise about going to college

Offer youth guidance and support their understanding of content and the skills introduced during the classes

Assist youth in setting goals and challenging themselves

Be an active listener and use guiding questions to promote learning

Build relationships with youth to promote safety, trust and support youth achievement with encouragement


Required Qualifications:
We are looking for MSU Denver students interested in building their skills around supporting youth academically, while building connections and working as a mentor. This is a great opportunity to gain new skills while making an impact by supporting the educational outcomes of youth.

1. Students must desire to build relationships with youth from diverse backgrounds

2. Students must be comfortable working online: must be present and fully prepare to have your camera on and interact virtually ( sometimes youth may have cameras off)

3. Students must be comfortable working in-person during COVID with proper safety Measures in place.

4. Students must be in good academic standing (not on academic probation).

5. Students must either be enrolled for at least 6 credits for the Summer or Fall of 2021 or have just graduated in either the Fall of 2020 or the Spring of 2021.


Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual preferred; at a minimum, the ability to understand and to make one self-understood to all Spanish speaking individuals
