Bridge to Calculus Mentor

About the Opportunity

Launched in 1994, the Bridge to Calculus summer program offered by the Department of Mathematics at Northeastern University has served Boston Public High School students entering and intending to take AP Calculus in their junior and senior year in the fall. Bridge to Calculus is offered free to those students who are accepted into the summer program and breakfast is provided. The program typically enrolls in excess of 100 students each summer.

Precalculus and Intro to Calculus classes are taught by experienced Boston Public High School teachers in collaboration with at least one Northeastern University Mathematics Department Faculty Member, as well as Northeastern undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics. The student mentors assist the classroom instructor and are under the supervision of a Math Department faculty member.

Responsibilities:

Monitor and record attendance and maintain, distribute and organize material for center. Provide support to teachers and leadership regarding curriculum and student struggles, accomplishments. "Circulate" in the center to help students one on one and in small groups in breakout sessions. Help maintain learning environment and question center positive culture. Provide feedback to teachers, leadership and student. Attend meetings/trainings with leadership and teachers. Help write reports and make recommendations at the end of the program. Conduct lessons/mini-lessons where needed (breakout sessions). Help organize events, especially for Friday lecture series. Help leadership with program evaluation.

Ability to work in a team setting, willingness to work with teachers and leadership team, highly developed personal integrity and leadership skills, ability to interact professionally with a diverse range of students and colleagues, strong sense of accountability and responsibility/reliability, passion for urban education and an unwavering belief children are deserving of a high caliber education, sense of humor, positive attitude, and willingness to work in a collaborative environment, math classroom/teaching/tutoring experience a plus, solid math content knowledge, positive, flexible and problem-solving attitude, willingness to learn more and share experience
